The American Swedish Institute discusses the special history and culture of the Swedish people who relocated to the United States, especially during the mid - and late -1800s, both preserving these group memories and sharing them with the public. Occupying the early 1900s Turnblad Castle, the building itself contains many pieces of Swedish heritage, like the 11 differently styled "kakelugnar," or heating and cooking stoves, and decorative sculpture pieces found throughout the mansion. An impressive collection of art, furnishings, books and antiques are on display, including a sizable grouping of Swedish glass items, textiles and items brought to the country by immigrants. It is in the Phillips West neighborhood of the city, just a few miles south of downtown near the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
